If you’re planning to work out at home vs gym, then you should consider getting great free weights that will help build a total body. The Bowflex 552 and Bowflex 1090 are two of the best pieces of equipment you can buy. They are also critical for doing programs like Insanity or P90X3, and you could always add them into your daily routine.

The Main Difference between Bowflex 552 vs 1090

Simply put, the Bowflex 552 vs 1090 is different in that the Bowflex 552 can distribute between 5 and 52.5 pounds in a single dumbell. The Bowflex 1090 can distribute between 10 and 90 pounds in a single dumbell. An easy way to remember this is by the names. Bowflex 552 distributes between 5-52 pounds, and the Bowflex 1090 distributes between 10-90 pounds.

Bowflex 552 vs 1090: Cost

As you might expect, the heavier weighted Bowflex 1090 is more expensive than the Bowflex 552.

  • Bowflex 552: $298.96
  • Bowflex 1090: $599.00

You won’t see any cost savings by scaling up from the Bowflex 552 vs 1090. One aspect of the 1090 that might be worth noting is that you can expect to pay very high prices for shipping unless you have an Amazon Prime membership (which on this one purchase alone could be worth the $120/mo.).

Another item that might be worth investing in if you decide to purchase the Bowflex 552 vs 1090 is the Bowflex SelectTech Dumbbell Stand. This heavy-duty piece of equipment can hold your weights at an optimal height, and looks great in your home gym or garage gym.

Bowflex 552 vs 1090: Design

There is no difference in design between the Bowflex 552 vs 1090. The Bowflex 1090 has one additional weight that makes the total weight of each dumbbell 90 pounds instead of 52.5 pounds.

Which is right for you: Bowflex 552 vs 1090

To answer this question, you have to determine what your regular workout routine is going to be. If you plan to try to build muscle through traditional weight lifting, and either have a bench or plan to get a bench for exercises like presses, then the Bowflex 1090 would be a good choice. That amount of weight will allow most people to scale up to bigger and bigger lifts.

For most people, however, especially those who want to incorporate some weights into their P90X3 schedule or other workouts like T25 or Insanity, then the Bowflex 552 is probably the better answer. 52.5 pounds is more than enough for most users to build muscle, trim fat, and get the ideal physique.
