P90X3 Review: Workout Detail
All of P90X3 workouts are designed so that you can do them from home with little to no equipment needed. As you progress, it is encouraged that you add resistance in the form of weights or bands to your workouts, but you will still get a great workout with nothing more than your body weight. Each P90X3 workout falls into one of four types: P90X3 Resistance, P90X3 Power, P90X3 Cardio, and Core, Flex, and Balance.
P90X3 Resistance
Resistance features the most workouts: Total Synergistics, The Challenge, The Warrior, Incinerator, Eccentric Upper, and Eccentric Lower. Each of these workouts focuses on using your bodyweight to create a well-toned and sculpted look while blasting fat.
Best Workout: The Challenge
This workout isn’t always fun, but it might be the best thing you can do for your body as far as building lean muscle fast! This combination of pushups and pullups will have your muscles working in overtime and you definitely feeling it for the rest of the day!
P90X3 Power
Power workouts include Agility X, Triometrics, and Decelerator. This group of workouts will build your base and allow you to build lean muscle. Plyometrics, aerobic and anaerobic exercises, and balance all play a big part in this series.
Best Workout: Agility X
Agility X is a non-stop cardio blast that really goes by fast. Plyometric movements are mixed in with jumps and quick movements. If you want to improve your athleticism, this one is for you.
P90X3 Cardio
Another three-workout group features MMX, CVX, and Accelerator. Nothing tricky about these workouts, as they are low intensity and filled with movements that will keep your heart rate spiked for the full 30 minutes. If your endurance is lacking, it won’t be after a few rounds of these!
Best Workout: MMX
Tony Horton teamed up with top MMA fighters to deliver this butt-kicking block of MMA and cross training moves. Knees, elbows, and kicks will give you more than you can handle in one of P90X3’s toughest workouts.
P90X3 Core, Flex, and Balance
At the center of any good at home workout series is a good balance stretching, flexibility training, and core work. While it might sound easy, the four workouts you get in the core flex and balance will go a long way toward ensuring your body can handle the intense workouts that go with the program. The workouts you see in this section are X3 Yoga, Pilates X, Dynamix, and Isometrix.
Best Workout: X3 Yoga
I really was never into Yoga (or stretching for that matter), but this program does a great job at explaining the benefits of Yoga to go along with the rest of the program, and it’s a great video to continue doing even after you finish the 90 day program.
Do you really NEED additional equipment?
One of the biggest questions I get asked is whether or no you NEED equipment like bands or weights or a P90X3 Pull Up Bar to do P90X3. For the record, you do not NEED equipment in order for P90X3 to be effective, but if you want to maximize your results, you should buy resistance bands or weights and a pull up bar. Most exercises rely primarily on body weight anyway, but there are times, especially later on in the program, where having that added resistance will take your fitness to the next level. Of course, everything is modifiable, and if you are uncomfortable with pull ups or weights, Tony does a great job at laying out the groundwork for effective workouts without anything extra.
P90X3 Final Thoughts
Every workout has a purpose, which is what makes it the gold standard for at home workout programs. Another great thing about P90X3 is how easy the workouts are to incorporate into your routine even after you complete the program. After going through all 16 workouts, you will know which ones will give you a great upper body workout, and you can do that along with jogging or hiking once the program ends.
As for the program itself, I have yet to find anything that is as good for every type of person, from athlete to beginner, that will improve your fitness and trim inches from your waist. P90X3 is great for men and women, and if you are on the fence as to whether this program is right for you, take a leap and give it a try!
